Traveling with sports teams sounds like a lot of fun, doesn't it? Who wouldn't want to take charter flights everywhere and stay in the most luxurious of hotels? Well, the truth is that for every major professional or top-tier college team that travels in this kind of style, there are dozens of smaller school teams that have to get to and from their destination in far less glamorous fashion.

Renting a charter bus is surely the second-most preferable way for a sports team to travel, but unfortunately, in an era in which everyone is watching the bottom line, the budgetary concerns of many schools don't even allow them to consider a bus. The athletes at these schools are often forced to pile into a few cars and head to the game or event.

There's no need for a team to be part of a caravan of cars heading down the highway to its game, though. Renting a van is a cost-effective way to travel that will also yield benefits to the team once it competes.

Most importantly, getting the team into a van reduces the worrying a coach has to do. How reassuring is it to have everyone under one roof and to not have to fret that one carload-or more-of players will get lost along the way?

Taking the task of driving away from some of the players will also result in a more relaxed and focused team. It's enough to have to get ready for a game, imagine having to account for driving several hours as well. Even the non-drivers will find their preparation compromised-it can't be easy to concentrate and ponder the upcoming game while being squeezed shoulder-to-shoulder with teammates. Having all the players stretched out in a van will put them at ease as well as improve team chemistry-road trips, after all, are where teams and players bond!

Freeing the players from driving will come in especially handy once the game begins. How can someone be expected to compete at his or her highest level if he spent hours earlier in the day, or the day before, behind the wheel? His or her legs will be fresher and his or her mind clearer for the game without the task of getting the team TO the game.

The same thing applies to a post-game drive. How much better will a player feel knowing that he or she doesn't have to jump back behind the wheel an hour or two after the final out is made or the final buzzer sounds? It'll be invigorating to everyone just to know that the coach or team chaperone is doing the driving and that the players can relax on the way home, rest and even fall asleep after a tiring and competitive game.

Everyone wants to travel in the most convenient and lavish of fashions, but charter planes are a fantasy for most teams. Renting a van, though, is a realistic alternative that provides an element of safety and comfort every team needs to not only get where it's headed but succeed once it arrives!
