Opened by one of the world’s most renowned book dealers, Bertrand Smith, Acres of Books quickly became one of Southern California’s top stores. In 1959, only five years before his death, Smith decided to give a permanent literary gift to the city of Long Beach. Smith donated a collection of rare books, including a copy of the Gutenberg Bible, to the Long Beach Public Library. Although Smith is gone, his legacy lives on at Acres of Books. In 1990, Acres of Book was recognized by the City of Long Beach as a cultural heritage landmark. When can I go?
