The Getty Center is the home of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles that you can visit with your van rental. The museum has been open since 1997.
Step back in time
The museum collects and exhibits classical sculpture and art, European paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculpture, decorative arts, and photographs. In general, except for photography, the museum does not collect art from the 20th or 21st century. Some of the famous works you can find here include Irises by Vincent Van Gogh and King of France and Navarre by Hyacinthe Rigaud. The current museum is located in Brentwood, and there is also a “Getty Villa” that you can visit with your van rental in Malibu. The Getty Villa houses Greek, Etruscan, and Roman sculptures that were once part of the Getty Center.
From sea to sky
The Getty Center was designed by architect Richard Meier. The Getty Trust is the largest arts endowment in history, valued at over $3 billion. The museum is located on a hill in Brentwood with your van rental and overlooks Bel-Air. On a clear day, you are able to see from the Pacific Ocean to the snow on Big Bear Mountain. The architecture of the building uses two naturally occurring ridges to define the space of the museum. Along one axis are the galleries and along the other the administrative buildings. There are five galleries: four permanent and one Changing Exhibit. The artwork inside the galleries is displayed in chronological order. The North gallery has the oldest art work, while the West Gallery has the newest. Throughout the grounds there are numerous fountains to provide white noise as a background. You can also take a break on the benches provided before leaving in your van rental.
Feel at one with nature
Within the Getty Center, you will find a 134,000-square-foot Central Garden for you to enjoy before leaving in your van rental. The garden is a natural ravine between the Museum and the Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities within the grounds. There is a stream that runs through the plaza and goes over a stone waterfall into a pool of azaleas.
Plan your visit
When you visit the Getty Center with your van rental there is detailed information about the collection available to visitors. There are a number of stations within the museum where you can get information about the exhibits, play with an interactive timeline, watch videos on art-making techniques, and much more. There is also an audio guide that will give you information about 300 works of art within the museum. When you visit the Getty Museum, admission is free, but there is an $8.00 parking fee imposed by the city. The museum is closed on Mondays.
