The Hollywood Walk of Fame is where stars are immortalized on the streets of Hollywood. You can see it with your van rental on Hollywood Boulevard from Gower Street to La Brea Avenue and on Vine Street from Yucca Street to Sunset Boulevard.
Become one of the famous ones
As you leave your van rental and walk down the street, you will see bronze star plaques embedded in pink and charcoal terrazzo squares. These stars are a salute to the celebrities who have built Hollywood, from silent film stars to today’s biggest Hollywood blockbusters.
Decode the stars
As you walk down the street after leaving your car rental LAX, you will notice that each star has one of five symbols underneath the star’s name. This will tell you what the person did in order to contribute to Hollywood. The five symbols are:
- A motion picture camera for movie stars and directors
- A television set for those in the TV industry
- A phonograph record for singers, songwriters, and recording artists
- A radio microphone for radio luminaries
- Twin theatrical masks of comedy and tragedy for live stage performers.
There is only one person on the Walk of Fame that has five of these stars. That is Gene Autry, who was a singing-cowboy and worked in all five of those industries.
What to look for
The Hollywood Walk of Fame started in 1960 with 2500 blank stars in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater and along the road. Today, about 2300 stars can be seen before you return to your van rental. Some more stars have also been added to the west end of the Walk in order to accommodate more stars.
How to be immortalized
The selection process for getting a star can be somewhat confusing. Before you get back into your van rental, you may wonder where the stars for Robert Redford, Mel Gibson, Jane Fonda and Clint Eastwood are. These huge stars have not been awarded one yet. However, you will see stars for some minor TV personalities, local radio deejays, animated characters, game show hosts, and even Lassie and Rin Tin Tin.
In 2007 stars such as Matt Damon, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jamie Foxx, Kiefer Sutherland, Barbara Walters, Mariah Carey, The Doors, and Sean “Diddy” Combs received stars on the Walk of Fame.
The Walk of Fame is where you can see one of Hollywood’s greatest tributes to those who built an industry we all enjoy: movies, music, television, and theater. As you walk along the street and look down, you will be reminded of some of your favorite movies of the past, or you may not recognize the names. Either way, this is a great activity that everyone can enjoy with your van rental, and it won’t cost you a cent!
