Magic happens on Mulholland Drive. Or so the story goes. One of the most famous roads in all of Southern California, Mulholland Drive is best known for its prominent role in popular culture and Hollywood scandal. Take a drive down this infamous road during your upcoming LAX car rental vacation and you'll enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding San Fernando Valley and multi-million dollar homes.
A brief look at the map
Mulholland Drive is mostly a two-lane, minor arterial road located along the ridgeline of the Santa Monica Mountains and the Hollywood Hills. LAX car rental travelers will find the eastern terminus of Mulholland Drive where it intersects with Cahuenga Boulevard. At the intersection of Encino Hills Drive, Mulholland Drive becomes an unpaved road not open to motor vehicles. LAX car rental travelers are encouraged to park and hike this section of the Drive. Hike long enough and you'll connect with other unpaved roads leading to a Cold War memorial park.
The easiest way to tour Mulholland Drive
LAX car rental travelers can tour along Mulholland Drive in a number of ways. While the 101 Freeway generally runs parallel to Mulholland Drive, there are surprisingly few opportunities to get between the two. The easiest way is to take the 405 Freeway (north or south). Exit at Mulholland Drive and then turn left. At this point you'll see Skirball Center Drive. LAX car rental travelers simply follow this short road to connect with Mulholland Drive. If you turn right at this point you'll be headed towards Hollywood. Hang a left on you're on your way to the San Fernando Valley.
Take the scenic route
While the above directions are easy, they don't include some of the drive's most impressive views. For a scenic tour of the San Fernando Valley during your upcoming LAX car rental trip, follow these directions:
- From the 101 Freeway, exit onto Balboa Boulevard, making your way into Encino. Turn south from the off ramp onto Balboa and continue until you see Ventura Boulevard. Hang a left and follow Ventura east to Havenhurst. Head south on Havenhurst. After a few stop signs you'll have to turn right again in order to stay on Havenhurst. When you reach Calneva Drive turn left. Continue up this hilled street unto you arrive at the top. Here is where you'll find Mulholland Drive. Turn left and prepare for a spectacular view of the San Fernando Valley for several miles. Continue traveling east and you'll eventually find your way to Hollywood.
Mulholland Drive in the movies
Mulholland Drive has captured the imagination of millions of people over the years, including some influential writers, musicians and movie stars. Here are just a few references to Mulholland Drive in popular culture:
- Ever heard someone refer to Mulholland Drive as "Bad Boy Drive?" Well, it's rumoured that the street got this nickname from residents like Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, Errol Flynn and Marlon Brando.
- Keen LAX car rental customers can catch references to Mulholland Drive in songs like Tom Petty's "Free Fallin,'" R.E.M.'s "Electrolite" and Josh Ritter's "California."
- LAX car rental fans of the 1950's TV Show "The Bob Cummings Show" may remember playboy-photographer Bob frequently talking about taking his date to Mulholland Drive. This is because "parking" was a common activity along the street' secluded areas.
- There is currently a ride named after Mulholland Drive at Disneyland's California Adventure theme park. It is called "Mulholland Madness.
- Are you a fan of Knight Rider? Think back to the pilot episode of 1982. Michael Knight's first ride behind the wheel of the Knight 2000 takes place along Mulholland Drive.
