Built on a dream
It was at one time the home to Native American tribes who used the streams and land to survive. In 1900, the land was purchased by the Amalgamated Oil Company, but there was no oil to be had here. So the corporation hired an architect, who designed the town with wide streets and many trees. The town was named because the owner happened to read a newspaper who thought the name Beverly was pretty, while the hills also provided a nice back setting. When the Beverly Hills Hotel was built in 1912, it soon became the center of social life in the area. The town was connected with Los Angeles through Hollywood with a streetcar line.
