Keep the first half of the day simple
Begin with the visitor center if it is open and suits your entry time. Check the day's advice, then choose a few viewpoints or one appropriate walk. A family with young children does not need a long hike to make the rental worthwhile; time to look at the landscape can be the point of the trip.
The BLM planning page identifies Lost Creek Children's Discovery Trail and Red Spring Boardwalk as shorter family options. They are not interchangeable stops on the drive: Red Spring is in Calico Basin outside the Scenic Drive. Choose one only after checking its location, conditions and suitability for your group.

Finish on the west side
After the scenic outing, have a meal along the return toward your accommodation or keep the rest of the afternoon for the hotel. Do not add Boulder City merely because the rental has several hours left. That spare time may be more useful for a relaxed lunch, a break from the heat or returning without pressure.
For a Red Rock day, the sequence is straightforward: collect the vehicle and supplies, reach the booked entrance, enjoy the drive and selected stop, then return through the west side. Let the entry window and conditions determine the departure time rather than copying a fixed hour from an itinerary.
Option 2: Boulder City with one southeast highlight
For the southeast version, choose Lake Mead or Hoover Dam as the main activity, then use Boulder City for a meal and time away from the road. Both major stops may fit some visits, but the default plan does not depend on completing a park outing, a dam tour and a full town visit before a rental deadline.
Pick an exact Lake Mead destination
The NPS visitor information identifies several entrances and notes that entrance and lake-use fees apply. Save the entrance and destination you intend to use, not just "Lake Mead" in navigation. A lakeshore stop, a marina visit and a trail walk can require different access and different amounts of time.
If a walk is the priority, consider a portion of the Historic Railroad Trail only when the weather and current conditions suit your party. NPS describes the full route as 3.7 miles one way, so walking all the way out and back is not a brief extra between other attractions. Choose a turnaround in advance and remember that the return still needs time and energy.
You can also make the outing a scenic visit without a long walk. Plan around a named, open viewpoint or recreation area on the official map, and check parking and the distance from the car. Do not promise swimming, boat access or shoreline facilities simply because the lake is visible.
Give Hoover Dam its own appointment

Oversized vehicles use designated parking on the Arizona side rather than the Nevada-side garage. Its exhibits give the concrete structure a human setting, making it a useful companion to a dam visit or an indoor alternative when the outdoor plan is unsuitable.
Check the museum's current access and hours, then leave time for a meal in town. Choose a restaurant around the group's needs and the return route, without adding another timed reservation unless it genuinely helps. Families can keep the visit short; travelers interested in the history can make it the main town stop.
For a southeast day, decide the sequence around the fixed commitment. A booked dam visit sets the timetable. A Lake Mead outing may work better in the cooler part of the day, with Boulder City afterward. There is no single correct order for every season.
Let conditions set the outdoor limit
Before either outing, check the destination's alerts, forecast and Nevada 511 road information. Carry water for everyone, sun protection, practical shoes and the supplies you need without relying on a last-minute purchase at a viewpoint. Keep phones charged and save directions for offline use.
Lake Mead's current conditions page lists 2026 seasonal closures of certain strenuous trails from May 15 through September 30, with possible additional heat closures. This is not a blanket closure of every trail. NPS lists the Historic Railroad Trail separately as remaining open, but open does not mean that a long exposed walk is sensible in the day's heat.
Storms can change the roads as well as the view. NPS warns about monsoon flooding and debris at wash crossings. Do not drive into floodwater or use a closed road to keep the itinerary on schedule. If the main outing becomes unsuitable, shorten the day or switch to a confirmed indoor visit.
